Interior Painting Tips for Tallahassee Homes

A fresh coat of paint is one of the fastest ways to update a room — but in Tallahassee’s climate, a rushed paint job can start peeling, bubbling, or yellowing within a year. Here’s what actually makes the difference.

1. Prep Work Matters More Than the Paint Brand

Most paint failures aren’t about the paint — they’re about what happened (or didn’t happen) before the roller ever touched the wall.

  • Clean the surface. Dust, grease, and grime (especially in kitchens and bathrooms) keep paint from bonding properly.
  • Sand glossy or old surfaces. A slick surface needs to be scuffed up so new paint has something to grip.
  • Patch and prime bare spots. Unprimed drywall patches absorb paint differently, leaving flat spots (“flashing”) once the room is done.

2. Humidity Affects More Than Just Drying Time

Florida’s humidity doesn’t just slow drying — it can affect how paint cures and adheres.

  • Aim to paint when indoor humidity is moderate and stable, not right after a shower-heavy weekend or during peak summer humidity with the AC struggling to keep up.
  • Bathrooms and kitchens need a paint formulated for moisture resistance, not standard wall paint.
  • Freshly painted walls should cure for several days before heavy humidity exposure (like running a hot shower nearby) to avoid soft spots or bubbling.

3. Choosing the Right Sheen for the Room

Room Type Recommended Sheen Why
Bathrooms, kitchens Satin or semi-gloss Resists moisture, easier to wipe down
Living rooms, bedrooms Eggshell or matte Hides wall imperfections, softer look
Trim and doors Semi-gloss Durable, easy to clean, highlights detail
Ceilings Flat/matte Minimizes glare and imperfections

4. Don’t Skip Primer on These Surfaces

Primer isn’t optional in a few common situations:

  • Painting over dark colors with a lighter color
  • Covering water stains or smoke damage (use a stain-blocking primer)
  • Fresh drywall or patched areas
  • Painting over glossy or oil-based paint

Skipping primer here often means multiple extra coats later — or a job that never quite looks finished.

5. Timing: When to Paint and When to Wait

  • Best months: Cooler, drier stretches make paint cure more evenly and let you ventilate without blasting the AC.
  • Avoid: Painting right before a heavy humidity spike or during a home’s peak “wet season” activities (lots of cooking, showering, or drying laundry indoors).
  • New construction or fresh drywall: Let the drywall fully dry and cure before painting — trapped moisture behind new paint is a common source of early peeling.

When DIY Makes Sense — and When It Doesn’t

A single accent wall or small room is a reasonable DIY project. Whole-home repaints, high ceilings, water-damaged walls, or rooms with a lot of trim and detail work are where a professional crew saves time, avoids costly redos, and gets a cleaner finish line (literally).
